On Monday, San Marino achieved a remarkable promotion to the third division of the Nations League by defeating Liechtenstein 3-1 after rallying from a deficit. After falling down at the half, San Marino’s goals from Lorenzo Lazzari and Alessandro Golinucci, as well as Nicola Nanni’s penalty, gave them their second-ever competitive victory. At the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz, San Marino’s players rushed onto the field in celebration of their promotion to League C.
The national team of the microstate, which secured their first competitive match victory against Liechtenstein in September, has secured promotion after winning Group D1.
Roberto Cevoli, the coach of San Marino, stated, “The boys were outstanding and deserved what they’ve managed to achieve, but ending that first half 1-0 down was an insult to football.”
Despite finishing the group one point ahead of Gibraltar, who they drew 1-1 with on Friday due to a last-minute Nanni penalty kick, San Marino is the bottom-ranked team in international football.
For the first time, they scored three goals in a formal match, and Golinucci’s first-time strike in the 76th minute, which sealed the victory, was the result of a deft passing sequence that was before unimaginable.
