Woman boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who took home a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, is “confident” that she will take home a gold at the next Olympics in Paris. A string of outstanding accomplishments, such as a gold medal at the 2023 World Boxing Championships and a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games, support Borgohain’s confidence. During an interview with JioCinema’s “The Dreamers,” she stated that she hopes to win gold in the next Games. A pivotal moment in Borgohain’s career occurred when she moved from the Welterweight (69 kg) division to the Middleweight (75 kg) division.
“I used to win bronze all the time, but ever since I moved to the 75 kg class, I’ve improved significantly. Although there was first doubt regarding weight gain, it has turned out to be advantageous. In the National Games, National Championships, World Championships, and Asian Championships, I have won four gold medals in a row. I feel confident now that I can go for Olympic gold,” she remarked.
Speaking about her readiness for Paris 2024, Borgohain emphasized the need of careful planning and commitment. “As the Olympics get near, each day and every session matters. It inspires me to set goals and work hard to achieve them. I plan my workouts to be as productive as possible in order to get closer to my gold medal every day.
As she looked back on her path, Borgohain related a moving story about how her love of boxing was first sparked as a youngster.
“I didn’t know anything about boxing when I was younger. One Sunday, my father—a tea plantation worker—brought home candies wrapped in a newspaper that had an article about Muhammad Ali. My interest in boxing was ignited by that moment. Using my understanding of martial arts as a guide, I went straight from my martial arts adventure to participating in national boxing,” the boxer stated.
Borgohain, the recipient of both the Arjuna and Khel Ratna awards, becomes the third Indian boxer to earn an Olympic medal, following Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. Her recent triumphs at the 2023 World Boxing Championships and the 2022 Asian Boxing Championships cemented her standing as a strong contender as she got ready to compete in the women’s 75kg category at Paris 2024.
