India defeated the USA seven wickets on Wednesday in New York, thanks to outstanding performances from left-arm bowler Arshdeep Singh and World No. 1 T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav. This victory guaranteed India a position in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. India’s bowling attack was so strong that it held the USA to 110 for 8 before taking only 18.2 overs to reach the mark, with Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube finishing on a combined score of 50 and 31 to win by seven wickets. India so easily advanced from Group A into the Super Eight with a match remaining after three straight victories. The last Group A match pits the Rohit Sharma-led team against Canada in Lauderhill, Florida on Saturday. It was the USA’s first defeat in three games. They now have a crucial Group A T20 match on Friday against Ireland.
Although it was far from easy, India’s 111-run chase was the most successful at the New York ground. The squad was nervously pursuing the goal, despite what the scoreboard seems to indicate. Virat Kohli’s departure for a golden duck and Rohit Sharma’s careless collapse dealt a blow to India early on. But a vital partnership between Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav anchored the innings. Suryakumar anchor one end even though Pant was finally dismissed for eighteen. Shivam Dube managed to hold onto his wicket and provide good support despite his problems. Suryakumar got a reprieve and made the most of it by reaching an undefeated half-century. Dube’s game-winning run gave India the much-needed lift they needed going into the next round.
USA PENALISED
In the meanwhile, the USA may be proud of their bowling performance, forcing India to fight hard for each and every run. When Saurabh got rid of Rohit and Kohli early on, it was a great start. For a time, they were able to keep the run rate under control, but they were unable to take additional wickets. They lost that momentum when Rishabh Pant was removed by Ali Khan’s superb delivery. As the game went on, Saurabh Netravalkar’s decision to remove Suryakumar proved costly. The USA was penalized five runs for sluggish overrates, which further undermined their confidence and gave the Indian hitters the opportunity to win the game. Three times throughout the game, the USA were penalized for going longer than sixty seconds between overs.
In a Group ‘A’ encounter of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday, India restricted co-hosts USA to a meagre 110 for 8, thanks to a tremendous effort by Arshdeep Singh, who recorded career-best figures of 4/9. The Indian speed assault was too much for the American batsmen to handle after their previous triumphs included strong hitting performances. Throughout the whole game, the hosts were unable to escape India’s firm hold on them. USA had a poor start, scoring just 42 in the first 10 overs, but with the help of Nitish Kumar (27), Steven Taylor (24), and former New Zealand international Corey Anderson (15), they were able to add 68 more in the last 10.
After trapping Shayan Jahangir leg before wicket for a duck on the opening delivery and dismissing Andries Gous (2) on the final ball of the over, Arshdeep’s early breakthroughs set the tone for India. With 17 dot balls throughout his outstanding performance, he demonstrated his brilliance at the start and finish of the innings. Only 18 runs were scored by the USA during the Powerplay, with captain Aaron Jones (11) hitting the only six off Mohammed Siraj before getting out of the game to Hardik Pandya (2/14 in 4 overs). Siraj had an easy time catching a short ball that Jones top-edged at deep fine leg.
Additionally, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, had the opportunity to test Shivam Dube (0/11 in 1 over), who had trouble with the bat and the ball. After making it through the Powerplay, opener Taylor smashed a six from Axar Patel, but he was bowled shortly after trying another big shot. Strong smashes by Nitish Kumar (27 off 23 balls), including a straight drive and a maximum off Pandya, offered some opposition. With a slog sweep for six off Axar, Anderson provided support. But Nitish’s innings was cut short by a superb catch made by Siraj at mid-wicket, leaving the USA at 81 for 5. Following Nitish’s exit, India’s dominance allowed them to limit the hosts to 110 for 8, shattering USA’s chances of reaching 120.
