After Black Caps skipper Tom Latham admitted his team couldn’t handle the pressure the tourists placed on them, Ben Stokes lauded England’s “more dominant cricket” for winning their first series in New Zealand since 2008.
After finishing with a crushing 323 runs at the Basin Reserve on Sunday afternoon, England took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series in just three days. It follows an eight-wicket victory in the opening match at Hagley Oval one week prior.
England was already up by 533 when they arrived on day three, having scored 378 for 5 in their second innings. In the end, Joe Root’s 36th Test century gave New Zealand an unlikely 583. For 259, they were bowled out.
Day one has seen the completion of the majority of the work. Harry Brook’s incredible 123 helped England overcome seaming conditions and race to 280 all out in 55 overs. With Brydon Carse’s 4 for 46 and Gus Atkinson’s 4 for 31 (including a hat-trick to end the innings) leading the way, they subsequently used the same conditions to dismiss New Zealand for 125 in their opening innings.

“We were 43 for 4 on day one of this Test in particular, so it’s amazing to be here on the winning side on day three. Even though we were bowled out in fifty overs (54.5), we still managed to score 270 runs, which was a respectable total for that day. Obviously, we still had time to make some progress with the ball. This game was set up by New Zealand’s 270 runs and five wickets at the end of the first day (they ended at 86 for 5).
We support ourselves so that we can go out there and switch games, and we believe that the game needs a little boost, especially with the
“As a bowler, you want to be able to repeatedly plunk it against the top of off stump after plonking it on a length. However, it can be rather difficult to stick with it when a batter has the guts to take you on and knock you off your length.
Latham reluctantly concurred with the opinion. Stokes, This was New Zealand’s seventh encounter and sixth loss to England during the Bazball era, so they knew what to expect. They couldn’t stop the vacationers’ intentions, particularly Brook’s.
Pope was moved to six to allow him to keep wicket after Jordan Cox fractured his finger on the last morning of England’s warm-up match in Queenstown. Bethell, the spare batter, was brought in at first drop.
In the first Test, England needed to reach 104, and Bethell hit an undefeated 50 off 37 balls to get them there. At Wellington, he surpassed that total with 96 in the second innings. In just his 22nd first-class outing, he was unable to get his first professional century.
Lower down the line, Pope has also performed admirably. In rebuilt, fifth-wicket first innings stands with Brook, a crucial 77 last week was followed by a similarly significant 66 here, of 151 and 174, respectively.
Pope, who has remained at three during Stokes spell, has declared his desire to go back there. The return of Jamie Smith, who missed this tour due to the arrival of his baby, Noah, last week, and Bethell’s greatness, however, present a dilemma.
Although Stokes avoided answering the issue, he praised Bethell, 21, for his ability to step up in a new role.
“Because of his inexperience and the dearth of top-tier cricket players, there was some discussion about Beth batting at three.
However, Baz and I don’t think that way. Why not give your young man the opportunity to experience Test cricket at its most difficult level? He has a lot of talent and promise.
“When I was little, I was heartbroken that he didn’t receive those three figures. “It’s only four runs, isn’t it?” I asked him as I entered. And he said, “Yeah, but it would have been flair if I smacked that through the covers to bring it up.” Class. He has, in my opinion, shown a lot of people why we hold him in such high regard.
