Although Steven Smith maintains he did not seek to be moved to No. 4 and would have remained to open if requested, he has stated Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne “hated” him opening the batting for the Test squad.
George Bailey, the chair selectors for Australia, announced last week that Smith “had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position” and that Andrew McDonald and captain Pat Cummins had made the decision. Smith would not be opening against India.
Playing down Smith’s role, McDonald said on ABC Radio over the weekend that he and Cummins were the main decision-makers in the move.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Labuschagne and Khawaja had both voiced their displeasure with his beginning.
“When asked where I would rather bat, I replied with four. However, I didn’t ask to transfer,” Smith remarked. “I also mentioned that I like hitting wherever. I’m not very concerned. When asked where I would prefer, I replied, “Four.” Last week, I came across a couple items stating that I had asked to bat at four. That was not true. Although I’m willing to bat anywhere you’d like, I mentioned that my favorite position would be at number four.
When asked what had changed since the beginning of the year, he responded, “There’s obviously a spot there now that Greeny [Cameron Green] is out.” And from what I’ve heard in our chats with Marnus and Uzi in particular after New Zealand, they really detested me.
They sort of like the security that they have behind them. They put a lot of pressure on me to bat there. It was therefore mostly that. Of course, I also have a respectable record at four.
“Trying my hand at something new, batting up top, was enjoyable. I really believe that I could work there. The sample size was somewhat tiny. However, I’ve performed admirably at four for a few years now. I believe that right now, it’s probably where I can contribute the most to this club.”
When asked if he thought he could have stayed in the position for a longer period of time, he said that his average of 28.50 in the four Tests he had the job was not too awful since no opener had an average of more than 32 in those four Tests.
Smith said, “To be honest, I’m not that fussed.” “I’m not too concerned with where I bat, as I stated when I accepted the position. The other men didn’t like it at all based on our chats. I see why they would have wanted some security behind them, given my track record of success over a period of years. I will not be opening this summer, but that is the how things are. That concludes it.
In his first red-ball innings since the March Test series against New Zealand and his first Sheffield Shield match since 2021, Smith scored three runs off of twenty-nine balls for New South Wales against Victoria.
“I actually felt pretty good out there, to be honest, for the three that I scored strangely enough,” Smith stated. “I thought I was progressing smoothly. As I was walking away, I was a little unlucky to have one that kind of took off down the side of my thigh. And it is possible. However, I thought I was genuinely moving into better places. I felt like I had a pretty solid bat path.
“I think he got a little unlucky there,” Smith remarked. It appeared as though it was briefly darting down the leg. He hasn’t been around much. Without a doubt, I would have preferred to see a little bit more of him out here in the center. However, based on what I’ve observed in the nets, he has plenty of time.
