Following Anthony McGrath’s transfer to Headingley as Yorkshire head coach, Silverwood will assume the position in mid-December. During Silverwood’s first stint at Essex, the team experienced one of its most prosperous eras.
Essex continued to win trophies under McGrath, who took over as assistant coach under Silverwood to lead the team to a Championship and Blast double, followed by the Bob Willis Trophy, even though Silverwood moved on, first as England bowling coach before replacing Trevor Bayliss as head coach in 2019.
“With the success we had in 2016 and 2017, as well as the success Anthony McGrath has had in the years in between, it’s a club that I have extremely unique memories of.
“Although the team still needs some work, I’m eager for the challenge that lies ahead, with a focus on putting in a lot of effort to support the development of our domestic players.
“Building on Mags’ efforts, my goal is to build the team to a place where we have a strong core of local players and in-depth strength. I can’t wait to start working right away to make sure the team is ready to compete on all fronts next summer and that the transition goes as smoothly as possible.”
The Covid-19 pandemic’s limits on touring had a major impact on Silverwood’s tenure as England’s manager, and he resigned following a 4-0 Ashes loss in 2021–2022. After the T20 World Cup earlier this year, he resigned as coach of Sri Lanka, where he coached for two years.
Over the summer, Essex changed the club’s leadership, appointing Dan Feist as general manager and firing John Stephenson as chief executive.
“We’re delighted to announce the reappointment of Chris, who was the outstanding applicant in a thorough recruitment process,” stated Jason Gallian, head of Essex’s cricket committee.
“Throughout the process, we made it very evident that our goal was to make the greatest choice possible, not simply a hasty one, and we are confident that we have adhered to that and chosen the finest applicant.
“I would want to use this occasion to express my gratitude to the Cricket Committee and Alastair Cook, who was a member of the interview panel and greatly provided their experience.
“After speaking with Chris, I am aware of his strong ambition to leave his imprint in the years to come and his unwavering desire to assume the position of director of cricket and take the lead strategically.
Everyone welcomes Chris back, and we’re excited to have him around Cloud County Ground once again and maybe help the team win on the field.”
