Gukesh scripted history on Thursday when he dethroned China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 to grab the title in Singapore.
On behalf of the Indian cricket team, opener Shubman Gill congratulated D Gukesh on Friday after the 18-year-old Grandmaster emerged as the youngest-ever global chess champion. When Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 on Thursday to win the championship in Singapore, he made history. “On behalf of the whole Indian cricket squad, I would like to congratulate D Gukesh. “Being the youngest World Chess Champion is an accomplishment in and of itself,” Gill told the media prior to the third Test match against Australia.
Gukesh became the 18th world chess champion overall after defeating Liren in the 14th game in 58 moves.
“For the past ten years, I have been dreaming about this moment. After the historic victory, the quiet Chennai boy had remarked, “I am happy that I realized the dream (and made it) into reality.”
Prior to Gukesh’s accomplishment, the renowned Russian chess player Garry Kasparov was the youngest world champion, defeating Anatoly Karpov in 1985 at the age of 22.
Earlier this year, Gukesh had won the Candidates tournament, making him the youngest person to ever challenge for the world championship.
After the renowned Viswanathan Anand, he is the second Indian to win the global chess championship.
