The Punjab Kings have formally named Shreyas Iyer as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League season.
Later in the year, the Kolkata Knight Riders released Shreyas, who helped the team win the 2024 tournament. Kings then acquired him for INR 26.75 crore, the second-highest purchase in the auction.

With four titles across all forms, the 30-year-old has enjoyed a very successful 12 months in both domestic cricket and the IPL. Iyer captained the Mumbai squad that won the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in addition to leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory the previous season. He was also a member of the Mumbai team that won the Irani Trophy and the Ranji Trophy.

In 2014, Kings had their finest season ever, reaching the final before losing to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Iyer thinks the side put together is strong enough to compete, and PBKS had a rather successful mega auction.
“I feel privileged that the team has trusted me. I am excited to collaborate with Coach Ponting once more. With a solid mix of both established and promising players, the squad appears to be formidable. I want to return the management’s trust in us by delivering our first title.
Being captain means that Iyer and Ricky Ponting, who led the Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, will now again serve as captain and coach. The Australian heaped accolades on Iyer’s qualifications and seemed excited to collaborate with him for a new assignment.
“Shreyas is quite intelligent about the game. The squad will be able to deliver thanks to his shown qualities as captain. I’ve liked working with Iyer in the IPL in the past, and I’m excited to do it once more. I am looking forward to the upcoming seasons because of his leadership and the team’s ability.”
Experts predicted that Iyer would be the leading candidate for Punjab’s captaincy from the moment the team purchased him at an incredible price. CEO Satish Menon disclosed that the aggressive offer by the Francisse for the Mumbai batter was the result of a major maneuver. Menon shares Iyer and Ponting’s belief that this captain-coach duo would aid Punjab in their comeback starting in the 2025 campaign.
“We thrilled at the outcome of the auction and chose Shreyas as our captain.” His vision for the squad is exactly in line with our objectives, and he has already demonstrated that he is an expert in the format. We are certain that our team has a strong leadership group to bring us to our first title now that he and Ponting are working together once more.”
