For the three-match series against England that begins in Antigua on Thursday, Shimron Hetmyer has been called up to the West Indies’ ODI team. The only change from the touring party that just returned from Sri Lanka is Hetmyer, who takes Alick Athanaze’s position in the squad.
In December 2023, Hetmyer participated in his final ODI match, helping the squad defeat England 2-1. He just placed sixth on the CPL run-scorers’ list, thus he was unable to attend the Sri Lanka trip for personal reasons.
Evin Lewis replaced Athanaze, one of the starting openers, during the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. West Indies ended the series with a consolation victory on DLS thanks to an unbeaten 102 off 61 balls from Lewis, who was playing in his first ODI in almost three years.
Shai Hope will captain the team, which also features 17-year-old batting sensation Jewel Andrew, who made his debut at the conclusion of the Sri Lanka series.
England’s third limited-overs trip since 2022 has already taken them to the Caribbean. Jos Buttler is still recovering from a calf injury that has kept him out since July, and Liam Livingstone will lead them for the ODI series.
According to West Indies head coach Daren Sammy, “Playing against England always provides a new challenge and reignites a rivalry that the players and the people of the Caribbean are eager for,” “When we play England, we West Indies usually seem to step up our game somehow.
Playing at home is always unique because of the enthusiasm and energy that the local crowd brings to every game.” We have chosen a well-rounded team that will undoubtedly challenge and contend with one of the top teams in the globe as we aim to qualify for the ICC Men’s globe Cup in 2027.”
The organizers will hold the first two ODIs at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua before the series travels to Barbados.
