With a 1-0 victory against promotion rivals Sunderland on Friday, Sheffield United moved to the top of the Championship thanks to a late goal from Tom Davies. Sunderland, who have now lost six straight games, had a penalty missed by Patrick Roberts. After gaining control within the Sunderland area, Davies rushed off the bench to steal all three points with minimal effort on minute 83.
Sunderland is still in fourth place after the loss, but they are now five points behind the leaders.
Leeds can reclaim the top place when they visit Blackburn on Saturday, although the Blades are already three points ahead of them.
At Bramall Lane, Sunderland had a great opportunity to take the lead, but Michael Cooper saved Roberts’ spot-kick by diving low to his left.
Five minutes before halftime, Mepham was sent off for fouling Tyrese Campbell on the edge of the penalty box, denying the striker a chance to score, reducing the visitors to ten men.
Time added on at the conclusion of the half saw Souttar receive a second yellow card for needlessly dragging over Wilson Isidor, bringing the scores back to even.
After the interval, both teams of ten men fought for the victory, which Davies’ perseverance and strong finish past Anthony Patterson ultimately brought about.
