On Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Delhi Capitals prevailed against the Rajasthan Royals in a thrilling match despite Sanju Samson, the opposing captain, having the only chance to complete the formidable chase. In IPL 2024, they ultimately managed to pull off a 20-run victory to maintain their chances of making the playoffs, while Rajasthan lost for the second time in a row. Even though the team prevailed in the thrilling match, all eyes were focused on Samson’s contentious and game-changing expulsion.
Samson was the only player for the Rajasthan Royals in Delhi, where they were chasing 222 runs to win. After Yashasvi Jaiswal was removed on the second delivery of the innings, he reached the crease in the opening over itself. He then proceeded to make a quick 40 runs during the powerplay, launching his aggressive knock in style.

The top order did not provide the Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper with much assistance; instead, the batsmen surrounding him made brief appearances. But Samson kept the struggle going, quickly reaching fifty and then speeding toward a hundred. However, everyone was focused on winning. With five overs remaining, his efforts had Rajasthan 63 runs from securing their place in the playoffs when he smacked a slot ball straight towards long-off.
RR unhappy with call of Samson out
Though it appeared as though Samson was headed for another six, Shai Hope, positioned in the deep, accurately assessed the overhead catch but needed to be more vigilant about whether his feet made contact with the boundary ropes. Given that he was standing quite near to the ropes at the moment of the catch, it appeared at first that his feet could have touched them when he was dismissed, but the DC players immediately began to celebrate the dismissal with joy.
The TV umpire was promptly called upon to make the call, and after considering the catch from a few, but not all, perspectives, he declared it to be a clean catch. However, Samson didn’t seem to be persuaded by the reprimand. With head coach Kumar Sangakkara of the Rajasthan Royals and the other players in the dugout in disarray, he lunged towards the umpires and got into a heated argument with the match officials. Feeling devastated by the dismissal, they all got up to attentively watch the replay once again, as Samson limped back to the pavilion. Parth Jindal, the co-owner of DC, lost all composure in the stands while yelling that it was out.
After 46 balls, Samson was out for 86. Rovman Powell was the final batting chance for the visitors, thus there was still hope for RR, but he was unable to do anything as the side fell by 20 runs.
