Attorneys for both parties claim that they have “resolved the civil case, including Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle as a defendant, to the satisfaction of both parties” and that they will soon dismiss it.
Thanks to the agreement, the parties partially avoided a trial that was slated to take place on April 28, 2025, during the NBA playoffs’ first round.
In December 2023, former agent Jarinn Akana filed a lawsuit, claiming that Carlisle had broken their contract and broken his word by not paying the agency the commission that was due for negotiating the coach’s 2018 contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks. According to court papers, the parties scheduled the trial date after mediation failed to result in a resolution during the summer.

Carlisle responded to the complaint by denying all of the claims and declaring that they are “not true in whole or in part.”
The complaint claims that after agent Dan Fegan, with whom Akana had collaborated, passed away unexpectedly, Carlisle, the longstanding president of the National Basketball Coaches Association, asked Akana to serve as his representative. According to the complaint, Fegan had a long list of player clients, and Carlisle had recruited him to renegotiate the coach’s contract with the Mavericks before to the agent’s passing.
The Pacers finished 47-35 last season and got to the Eastern Conference finals after rebuilding the previous two years. This was Carlisle’s first team to win a playoff series since the Mavericks’ 2011 championship run.
