Rasmus Hojlund scored two goals as Manchester United defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the Europa League to honor Ruben Amorim’s debut game at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Roma held Tottenham to a draw on Thursday. After starting the season with three straight draws, United overcame a late first-half deficit against Norwegians Bodo/Glimt to record their second successive Europa League victory after firing Erik ten Hag. “I’m from Portugal and haven’t done anything for this team, so half of the crowd doesn’t recognize me. But it’s unique how they make me feel at home,” Amorim said to TNT Sports.
It took less than 60 seconds for Manchester United to break the tie against Bodo/Glimt when they scored in the second minute of former Sporting Lisbon manager Amorim’s debut game as manager at Ipswich on Sunday.
Alejandro Garnacho tapped into an empty net after Hojlund stopped a weak back ball that placed visiting goalkeeper Nikita Haikin under pressure.
However, Hakon Evjen’s equalizer in the 19th minute and Philip Zinckernagel’s goal for Bodo/Glimt four minutes later exposed United’s defensive weaknesses.
Until Noussair Mazraoui’s cross found Hojlund, who flicked the ball up with a deft touch and calmly volleyed into the bottom corner, United appeared to be lacking in ideas.
Less than five minutes after the restart, Manuel Ugarte crossed the ball across the face of goal for Hojlund to poke in, giving the home team the lead again.
When goalie Andre Onana handled beyond his area in the second half, the referee waved play on, saving United from a serious fright.
However, Amorim’s team persevered to make a strong home debut for their new leader.
