Madan Lal believes Rohit Sharma’s dwindling form has started to reflect on his captaincy after India fell to a 10-wicket defeat against Australia in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
After India lost to Australia by 10 wickets in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, former cricketer Madan Lal feels that Rohit Sharma‘s declining form has begun to affect his leadership. Australia’s 10-wicket thumping of Sharma was his fourth straight defeat as India’s Test captain. Sharma’s bat has been silent ever since he led India to win against England earlier this year with his courage.
Even though he came down at number six, his poor form carried over to Australia, as he managed to score just nine runs in both innings in Adelaide, opening the door for Rahul, who appeared to be in even better form in the first test match in Perth.
His failures have been many. In response to Sharma’s recent performance, Madan Lal told ANI, “He is a top-tier player, but you have to score runs.”
Regardless of the position he plays, Madan Lal feels that despite Rohit’s status as a world-class player, he must perform with the bat to silence his detractors.
“When your form is poor, it might occasionally affect your captaincy. He needs to score runs, but the form is only one game away. He is a top-tier player, therefore his runs matter regardless of the position he plays. “The only way to stop criticizing players is to score runs,” he continued.
In three Test matches, Rohit scored 91 runs at an average of 15.17 during India’s historic 3-0 home series thumping of New Zealand. Rohit scored just 42 runs at an average of 10.50 in two Test matches against Bangladesh.
