PV Sindhu took just 29 minutes to dispatch her lower-ranked opponent 21-9 21-6 in the Group M fixture.
Indian shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympian, defeated Fathimath Abdul Razzaq of the Maldives in straight games to start her Olympic career in the women’s singles group round on Sunday. In the Group M match, Sindhu, who is competing for a third Olympic medal, easily defeated her lower-ranked opponent 21-9 21-6, demonstrating the class difference between the two players. Following a few of careless mistakes, Sindhu quickly evaluated the situation, seized charge of the match, and accelerated to an 11-4 lead.
With the first game over in just 13 minutes, the former world champion defeated Fathimath, ranked 111th in the world, handily.
In the second game, everything happened in a similar way. Sindhu quickly took the lead by scoring the first four points.
But Razzaq took advantage of Sindhu’s mistake to close the score to 3–4. However, the Indian extended the lead to 10-3, making it an entirely one-sided game once more.
Even though Sindhu ultimately had 14 match points, the world No. 13 only needed one to win the tie.
