Rahul Dravid, after leaving the job of Team India’s head coach, is set to seal his return to the Indian Premier League.

Rahul Dravid, who won the T20 World Cup in 2024 as head coach of the Indian side, is apparently preparing for a new journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Following the conclusion of his time as the Indian team’s head coach, Dravid has been connected to a number of T20 league teams. Prior to Gautam Gambhir’s departure from the Kolkata Knight Riders to take over as head coach in Dravid’s place, the legendary batsman was said to be considering a move to the Indian squad. However, it has now been revealed that Dravid is in communication with the Rajasthan Royals, his last IPL team.
According to a source cited by Times of India, “RR and Dravid are in talks, and an announcement in this regard is around the corner.”
Gambhir started his tenure as the Indian team’s head coach while Dravid is searching for a new challenge. Prior to the white-ball assignment, he and the other Indian squad members took a plane to Sri Lanka. Given what Dravid accomplished with the Indian team while serving as head coach, Gambhir acknowledged before the squad’s departure that he had some very large shoes to fill.
After India defeated South Africa in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2024, Dravid made jokes about being “jobless” starting the next month and asked media if they had any offers.
Dravid was unwilling to stay on as head coach of the Indian team because he did not want to travel for ten months out of the year and be apart from his family. The Indian Premier League, however, is not the same. Dravid may be interested in the T20 league as he would just need to spend two to three months a year with the team.
The former captain of India has previously served as a coach and mentor for IPL teams. Dravid coached the Delhi Daredevils team until resigning in 2017 due to a “conflict of interest.” Dravid has coached India’s younger sides, notably India A and Under-19, since his IPL career ended.
It will be intriguing to watch what role the former India head coach would have with the Rajasthan Royals now that he is associated to the team.
