Currently, the Indian Premier League IPL 2025 is regarded as the largest franchise league globally. The Grand League was the first to pave the path for cricket’s commercialization.
There is always room for development, even if the IPL has opened the door for several other leagues in various nations. SA20 is just three years old, while the IPL has matured like a beautiful wine and will become eighteen this year. The IPL can, however, learn a few things from the still-emerging competition.
3. Bonus Point System
Teams in the IPL league stage receive two points for every victory. This does not allow for the recognition of exceptional performances or the teams’ complete dominance in some games.
SA20 gives teams four points for every victory, while it awards five points to a team that achieves a run rate 1.25 times that of the opposition. To demonstrate the unit’s dominance in the game, officials deduct one extra point. When many teams have the same amount of victories at the end of the league stage, these additional points are helpful.
2. Captains Allowed To Select Form Two Different Playing Combinations During Toss
The SA20’s option of playing combinations is one of its most recent advancements. Before the toss, the captains of the two participating teams may name two squads. Depending on whether they are bowling or batting first in the game, the captain chooses one of two combinations during the toss.
Similar rules apply in the IPL, albeit they are more player-specific. Before the game begins, the IPL allows teams to nominate five substitute players. They can choose one of these five players to enter as an impact substitution, depending on the circumstances of the game and the match.
Numerous IPL players, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have said that the impact player rule has made the game more one-dimensional. Therefore, it could be preferable for the IPL to implement the two-playing XI guidelines.
1. No Overthrow Runs
SA20 promotes aggressive and upbeat fielding. The league has a regulation stating that if a direct hit deflects off the stumps, the team cannot deduct any runs from a deliberate attempt to run out the hitter.
This adds another dimension and makes fielding a more important and significant part of the game. Such regulations would make T20 less batter-dominated and one-dimensional, forcing teams to consider more carefully which players they want on the field.
