Porter uses a friend’s internet account to wager on NBA games as well.
Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, said that Porter deserved the “most severe punishment” for his “blatant violations”.
“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport,” Silver said. “Which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment.”
According to the inquiry, Porter told someone he knew was a sports bettor about his condition before to a March game against the Sacramento Kings. Porter then said that he was sick and played for a mere three minutes.

Porter’s second accomplice had wagered $80,000 (£64,000) that he would do poorly in that particular game. However, the wager, which was supposed to pay out $1.1m (£880,000), was held and never resolved as a result of Porter’s conduct and suspicious betting behavior.
Additionally, it was discovered that Porter used a friend’s internet account to wager $54,000 on 13 NBA games between January and March 2024. Porter did not participate in any of the games.
NBA players are prohibited by league regulations from placing bets on NBA games.
“While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players,” said Silver.
The NBA said that further results might come from the inquiry, which is still ongoing.
