As per a report, star India pacer Mohammed Shami may choose to prioritise his recovery for IPL 2025, instead of rushing back for the Test series vs Australia.
Mohammed Shami may decide to skip the series even though he has been given a long-awaited return to Team India for the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A BCCI source claims that Shami may decide to save himself for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and the Indian Premier League (IPL) season that follows, in which Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) acquired him for Rs 10 crore.
“It appears that the swelling comes and goes. Due to his own desire to play more domestic cricket, it is likely that he will return to play for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which begins on December 21.
“He can then bowl at least three spells and 10 overs per game,” a BCCI source, who wish to remain anonymous, told PTI.
“Shami’s career is nearing its business conclusion. What if, after a prolonged period, his knee starts to malfunction in Australia? It will be difficult for him to field. He had ankle surgery, therefore he missed the most recent IPL.
“He has a big agreement with SRH this time, at Rs 10 crore. If he want to keep himself in white ball format for the time being, you can’t blame him,” the insider continued.
Shami took 11 wickets in nine games at a solid economy rate of 7.85 during Bengal’s respectably successful Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 campaign. Shami demonstrated his batting ability in addition to his skill with the ball, smashing an undefeated 32 off of 17 balls to lay the groundwork for Bengal’s triumph against Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinals.
Jasprit Bumrah will continue to lead India’s pace department in Shami’s absence, with Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Akash Deep also playing a role.
