Despite criticism from some French club supporters, Marseille confirmed on Thursday that it had acquired Mason Greenwood, a striker, from Manchester United. The 22-year-old, who has only made one appearance for England, was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 after it was alleged that he had attempted rape and sexual assault. However, in February 2023, the prosecution withdrew the accusations. The previous season, he played in La Liga on loan at Getafe. “We are happy to announce that Mason Greenwood has joined Olympia de Marseille from Manchester United. After a satisfactory physical, the 22-year-old striker signed with the team,” the French club said on their website.
Marseille’s statement contained no reference to the accusations. Greenwood was dubbed a “English nugget” and “a precocious talent” by them.
The southern team, which finished ninth in Ligue 1 the previous season, said that their new striker will wear the number 10 shirt, although they did not provide a contract duration or indicate a payment to Manchester United.
Nonetheless, it is believed that the transaction is worth 30 million euros, or $32.7 million.
Mason’s future professional endeavors are our best wishes, United stated on their website.
Benoit Payan, the left-wing mayor of Marseille, said to French media prior to the deal being public, “I don’t want my club to be covered by shame.”
Greenwood has always refuted the accusations.
When he first joined Getafe, he declared, “I did not do the things I was accused of, and in February I was cleared of all charges.”
“However, I fully accept I made mistakes in my relationship.”
In the Champions League of 2019, Greenwood made his Manchester United debut at the age of 17 years and 156 days. Four days later, he made his Premier League debut. September 2020 marked his England debut.
