Following Manchester United’s announcement on Tuesday that “nothing is decided yet” regarding the Sporting Lisbon coach as their top target to succeed fired manager Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim declared. Ten Hag’s two-year reign came to an end on Monday as United, one of the richest teams in the world, dropped to 14th place in the Premier League following a 2-1 loss to West Ham. A statement released by Sporting to the Lisbon stock exchange stated that United was willing to pay Amorim’s 10 million euro (8.3 million pounds, $10.8 million) release clause, as he swiftly became the front-runner to succeed the Dutchman.
After Sporting’s League Cup victory against Nacional on Tuesday night, the 39-year-old was reticent when asked if it was his final game with the Portuguese team.
“No one is certain if this was my final match. According to sports newspaper A Bola, the Portuguese coach stated, “Nothing is decided yet.”
United has only won one of their previous eight games in all competitions, despite making significant summer transfer purchases.
Although Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former United striker, has been appointed temporary manager, United seems to be focusing on Amorim, who is regarded as one of Europe’s top young managers.
Since joining Sporting in March 2020, he has won two Portuguese championships.
When questioned on Monday before the League Cup game, Amorim had brushed off the rumors.
“I’m not going to talk about my future,” he said. “I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting Lisbon.”
