Bournemouth shocked the champions, Manchester City lost their first Premier League game since December, Arsenal was thrashed by Newcastle, and Liverpool took the lead on Saturday. Prior to a loss against Aston Villa last year, City had won all 32 of their league games. But in a 2-1 setback on the south coast of England, Pep Guardiola’s second-place team unexpectedly ended that run. In their 21 prior games, the Cherries had never triumphed against City and had lost 19 of them. However, Andoni Iraola’s club pulled off a stunning shock to deny the champs their fifth consecutive championship.
With a 2-0 victory at the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth recently hurt Arsenal’s chances of winning the championship and hurt City too.
Guardiola had stated that City was facing a “emergency” of injuries following their League Cup loss to Tottenham on Wednesday due to fitness issues.
Antoine Semenyo, a winger for Bournemouth, hammered a cross from Milos Kerkez past Ederson from inside the box in the ninth minute, shocking City, tired or not.
Guardiola’s team failed to mount a counterattack, and in the 64th minute, Evanilson finished calmly from Kerkez’s cross to increase Bournemouth’s advantage.
In the 82nd minute, Josko Gvardiol’s header cut the lead, but it was too late to prevent City from suffering their second loss in as many days.
“The balance is a little off since so many of our players aren’t getting any minutes. We were unable to cope with their intensity today. We lost the game because of it,” Guardiola remarked.
With a 1-0 victory at St. James’ Park, Newcastle severely damaged fourth-place Arsenal’s hopes of winning the championship.
In the twelfth minute, Alexander Isak headed home a precise cross from Anthony Gordon.
Injury-hit Arsenal just managed one shot on goal during the whole match and had trouble getting out of first gear.
After finishing second to City the previous two years, Mikel Arteta’s club has only managed one point in their last three games.
“We weren’t our best selves today. It all depends on how you respond to that. With his team seven points behind the leaders, Arteta stated, “We’re not going to find the right words or answers to describe how we feel.”
