Before the forthcoming IPL 2025 season, Jonty Rhodes, the fielding coach for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), responded to the circulating rumors that India captain Rohit Sharma may leave the Mumbai Indians. With the big auction drawing near, rumors regarding Rohit’s future in the IPL are spreading, with many speculating that he may leave the Mumbai Indians after years of productive collaboration.
Rhodes, who worked closely with Rohit while they were teammates at the Mumbai Indians, was quick to praise the star batter’s extraordinary abilities and grace on the field.
“I mean, I thought I had the finest job in the world at Mumbai Indians for a very long period. I got to see Rohit Sharma play cricket and rehearse. Rhodes told ANI, “He is so elegant.”
Though Rhodes expressed his appreciation for Rohit, he made it apparent that LSG can succeed in the IPL without Rohit’s participation. Rhodes noted Rohit’s talent but emphasized that no one player can carry the team’s winning efforts alone.
“Well, there’s the squad composition and balance. Although I enjoy watching Rohit Sharma bat, I’m not advocating that he replace anyone else just because we abruptly changed our arrangement. Thus, as I already stated, I would try my best to support whoever is present no matter what,” he continued.
Rhodes responded to a query from News24 on Rohit’s possible presence at LSG by saying that any team would be happy to have the Indian skipper.
“Rohit Sharma has titles and experience. Any team he joins will be happy to have him. We have a structure, and I’m not aware of how owners and captains make decisions. That’s what the mentor and head coach are for. From that vantage point, Rhodes stated, “Anyone will be glad to have Rohit wherever he goes, if he goes.”
Beyond Rohit, KL Rahul, the current captain of LSG, has also been a subject of much debate due to his lack of assurance. Following a disheartening defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, there were rumors that Rahul could have played his final game for the team after receiving a reported admonition from club owner Sanjiv Goenka. Earlier this week, the owner confirmed Zaheer Khan as the team’s new instructor during a press conference, and he stressed that Rahul is a member of LSG’s “family.”
Rhodes graciously refrained from offering any firm answers when asked about Rahul’s future, instead expressing satisfaction that he would not be in charge of choosing retention.
