London Spirit maiden victory in The Hundred men’s competition at Lord’s came against Welsh Fire in a low-scoring match, which they won by three wickets.
Dan Worrell’s opening ten balls of the game were all dots, setting the tone for Fire, who could only muster 94 for nine thanks to three wickets each from Liam Dawson and Nathan Ellis.

With 13 balls left, Matt Henry took three fast wickets to give Fire hope, but Dan Lawrence remained composed throughout a nerve-wracking chase, scoring an undefeated 29 to set up Shimron Hetmyer’s unbeaten 30 and leading the hosts home.
After failing to score off Worrall’s first ten balls, Tom Kohler-Cadmore was removed from the field shortly after Andre Russell made a wonderful catch while racing backwards off Olly Stone.
After Luke Wells struck the only two sixes of the innings, Worrall was rewarded for his effort by dismissing him, then Dawson bowled Joe Clarke with just two of the first 35 balls faced by Jonny Bairstow.
When he eventually got the strike, the England player hit a few boundaries, but he was bowled swiping against the line, giving Ellis his maiden wicket.
Ellis and Dawson then tightened the squeeze, giving up only 26 from their combined 40 balls. World Cup winner Dawson returned three for ten as Fire staggered to a score that was never going to be sufficient. Dawson displayed all of his expertise on the two-paced surface.
Ollie Pope, Michael Pepper, and Adam Rossington were removed by Henry, giving the Welsh team the early wickets they needed to reduce Spirit 25 to three.
Ravi Bopara was caught behind by Haris Rauf, who would go on to score a hat-trick, before Lawrence and Hetmyer calmed fears with a 46-run partnership.
Lawrence, who had done most of the hard work, failed to make a catch off Rauf, who then bowled Russell the next ball. Hetmyer then rode his luck after being dropped, and Bairstow failed to stump a difficult delivery.
To close out the match and launch the Spirit campaign, the West Indian stuck around and cracked a six.
Dawson, the Meerkat Match Hero, stated: “After losing the previous two, we had a tremendous game tonight. Reaching the finish line will boost our confidence tremendously. I’ve had a good start; the pitch was excellent for bowling on, allowing the ball to land in the proper spot and the surface to do the heavy lifting. In the end, things were a little tight.”
“Hopefully we can get a roll now and keep performing like that,” stated Spirit captain Lawrence. I made the error of attempting to finish the game as quickly as possible. I was only attempting to remain indoors and take measured chances.”
