Due to Storm Darragh’s unfavorable weather, officials postponed Premier League leaders Liverpool’s Saturday Merseyside derby trip to Everton. Strong winds and heavy rain severely disrupted travel in the western areas of the United Kingdom. After a discussion among the two clubs, local police, and Liverpool City Council, Everton confirmed in a statement that they postponed the match for safety reasons.
“Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance,” the statement said.
The match will be the league’s last Merseyside derby at Everton’s Goodison Park, where the team has played since 1892, before they relocate to a new stadium with a 53,000 capacity the following season.
After 14 games of the 38-match season, Liverpool leads the Premier League with seven points.
The UK’s national weather agency, the MET office, issued a rare red weather warning for south-west England and Wales on Friday, which led to the postponement of fixtures in Plymouth and Cardiff in England’s second-tier Championship.
