When Liverpool and Everton play in an intense Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Premier League leaders Liverpool will be looking for more magic from Mohamed Salah. While Wolves manager Gary O’Neil and West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui fight to stay in their jobs, Chelsea, who have emerged as unexpected championship candidates, take on Tottenham. Ahead of this weekend’s events, AFP Sport examines the main talking points:
When Liverpool plays their opponents in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in the Premier League, Mohamed Salah’s scorching form may be the perfect remedy for Everton’s irascible supporters.
In a top-flight game on Saturday, Everton will play the Reds for the last time in their 132-year-old home. The Toffees will move to a new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock in time for the upcoming campaign.
Liverpool has always been antagonistic toward Goodison, but given the importance of their most recent domestic dispute, the Everton supporters will be considerably more enraged than normal.
“I’d like to think it’ll bring our fans to the fore,” stated Sean Dyche, manager of Everton.
If Egypt’s Salah continues his hot streak, Liverpool will be sure to quiet the boisterous crowd.
In a 3-3 draw against Newcastle on Wednesday, Salah, who has scored nine goals in his past seven league games, broke Wayne Rooney’s record by scoring and providing an assist in the same Premier League game for the 37th time.
Salah claimed last week that he was “disappointed” that the club had not extended his contract, which expires at the end of this season.
However, Liverpool manager Arne Slot recognizes Salah’s worth after he scored 15 goals in all competitions this season.
“Mo Salah always scores a goal when we need him. He stated, “We hope and expect that he can continue this for a long time.”
