Ravindra Jadeja reached his third ten-wicket haul in Test cricket, taking eight balls in the morning. India was at 147 after New Zealand managed to add three to their overnight lead of 143. South Africa was the only team to successfully pursue a greater target at the Wankhede Stadium, back in 2000. Only eight fourth-inning scores have been higher than the 147 required by India to prevent a first-ever home series annihilation in a three-Test or longer series.
New Zealand chose not to roll the pitch, which may settle the pitch for 15 to 20 minutes, at the beginning of the day when they only had one wicket to claim. The result was evident: the final pair found it difficult to put bat to ball as the ball twisted abruptly. Before Jadeja hit three singles, R Ashwin bowled a maiden over. Jadeja eventually achieved his second-best match numbers in Test cricket after Ajaz Patel’s slog sweep settled with deep midwicket.
