Inter Milan crushed 10-man Empoli 3-0 on the road on Wednesday to solidify their second-place finish in Serie A. With a 2-0 victory over lowly Monza, Europa League champions Atalanta moved up to third place, while Juventus lost crucial points once more and fell to fourth place with a 2-2 home draw against Parma. Resurgent Napoli defeated AC Milan 2-0 on Tuesday, with a spectacular goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to give them a four-point lead at the top of the league on 25.
However, reigning champions Inter maintained their speed on Wednesday, defeating Empoli, who had a player sent off after the half when Saba Goglichidze walked for a risky tackle on Marcus Thuram.
Simone Inzaghi’s Inter took the lead thanks to a brace from Davide Frattesi, a deflection, and a calm finish in the 50th and 67th minutes. A defensive error led to Lautaro Martinez’s game-winning goal in the 79th minute.
“Winning was crucial following Napoli’s triumph,” Inter captain Martinez stated.
After their thrilling 4–4 tie with Juventus over the weekend, Inter had won five straight league games.
Despite their most recent victory, Inter coach Inzaghi raged, saying, “I’ve been thinking a lot over the last two days about our draw against Juve, there are things that didn’t work and we should have won that match.”
Juventus, who have yet to lose in Serie A this season, fell behind 1-0 in just three minutes as an unmarked Enrico Del Prato headed home for Parma.
A second defensive mishap gave Simon Sohm an open opportunity on goal prior to halftime, even though Weston McKennie equalized on minute thirty-one.
Just after the break, Timothy Weah pulled Juventus equal, although they are currently seven points behind leaders Napoli.
After falling behind 2-0 until Joel Pohjanpalo scored two penalties and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia scored a goal to get them off the bottom of the standings, promoted Venezia defeated Udinese 3-2.
With late goals from Lazar Samardzic and Davide Zappacosta, Atalanta defeated a tenacious Monza to go up to third place with 19 points, one point ahead of Juventus.
