After defeating Parma 3-1 at the San Siro on Friday, Inter Milan fell one point behind Serie A leaders Napoli in preparation for a crucial Champions League matchup against Bayer Leverkusen. Federico Dimarco and Nicolo Barella, both Italian internationals, scored brilliant goals either side of halftime, and Marcus Thuram’s deft volley in the 67th minute was sufficient for the defending champions to go close to Napoli.
After losing to their capital city rivals in the Italian Cup on Thursday, Napoli will play Lazio on Sunday night.
“Today, we scored some fantastic goals… The fact that we gave in is the only disappointing thing. Given our performance during the 94 minutes, we didn’t deserve it,” Inzaghi told DAZN.
Inter, who have won 14 straight games across all competitions, will go to Leverkusen on Tuesday with the knowledge that a victory would almost guarantee them a spot in the round of 16 with two games left.
With a crucial European match approaching, Inzaghi chose his strongest available starting lineup, including captain and star striker Lautaro Martinez for his 300th Inter appearance. Parma, who scored a late own goal from Matteo Darmian, currently sit 12th in Serie A.
Six minutes after Thuram scored his 10th league goal of the season, the 27-year-old held his head in his hands after missing a fantastic one-on-one opportunity with Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Thuram, an attacker for France, was born in Parma, where his father, Lilian, played for five seasons. As a member of a team that included Italian greats Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro, the team won the 1999 Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup.
