Rahul Dravid allegedly refused requests from senior Indian cricketers to continue leading the Test team. It is also improbable that VVS Laxman will join the battle.

Rahul Dravid will allegedly leave his position as head coach of Team India after the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, and Rohit Sharma would take over. On Monday, the Indian Board of Control for Cricket opened applications for the position of president, which has a three and a half year term. The T20 World Cup will conclude next month, and although Dravid will no longer be the head coach, the BCCI has left opportunities open for the former captain of India.
Applications must be submitted by May 27, 2024. If the batting icon wishes to continue leading the Rohit-led team as head coach, he will need to reapply. After the T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean concludes on July 1, India’s new head coach will assume leadership of the senior team. The head coach of India’s tenure will end on December 31, 2027.
Why Rahul Dravid not seeking an extension
Dravid has already stated that he will not be requesting an extension for personal reasons, according to a Sportstar article. Prior to the commencement of the IPL 2024 in March, the Indian head coach spoke with the BCCI’s higher authorities the importance of family time. Dravid was also persuaded to continue leading Team India for a minimum of another year by a group of seasoned players. After the T20 World Cup, Dravid is eager to leave the men’s squad, though.

VVS Laxman unlikely to enter the fray
According to the article, VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy, is ‘unlikely to enter the race’ for the head coach position following Dravid’s departure. Following the T20 World Cup, Laxman was seen as the front-runner to succeed Dravid as India’s head coach. For the last three years, the clear favorite has led the NCA. Laxman has agreed to serve as India’s interim coach at the Asian Games in place of Dravid. In the bilateral T20I series against England, New Zealand, and Ireland, Laxman also served as Team India’s coach.
If not Laxman, then who?
Head coaches of the IPL clubs have been questioned about the top position as Rahul is expected to go and Laxman is not expected to enter the race. To ensure their availability following the World Cup, the IPL head coaches will need to apply for the position. The top two candidates who may be interested in applying for the position are Justin Langer of the Lucknow Super Giants and Stephen Fleming, head coach of the Chennai Super Kings, according to earlier sources.
