In the Indian Premier League 2024, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Gujarat Titans by four wickets on Saturday to win three games in a row and move up to sixth place in the standings. Prior to the match against the Titans, RCB had been languishing at the bottom of the standings for more than a month; however, the team began a comeback last week with a victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad and hasn’t looked back. This year’s victory over the Titans was RCB’s second over the team.
But even though the team appears to be gathering steam as the season draws to a close, its great all-around player, Glenn Maxwell, is still waiting to turn things around. The Australian sensation’s main function in the team, batting, has been lacking, despite the fact that he has been invaluable with the ball in several of their games.
Maxwell was removed after just four balls on Saturday, failing to leave an impression as the RCB faced a scare in their meager 153-run chase. The opening pair of Faf du Plessis (64), and Virat Kohli (42) scored 92 runs in just 5.5 overs in the chase, but none of the middle-order batsmen could reach double digits, which caused the lineup to collapse.
After taking five wickets at 92/1 and scoring 25 runs, Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh ultimately maintained composure to lead RCB to victory. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel, who has also played for RCB, wasn’t holding back even after the team prevailed, taking aim at Maxwell’s mixed results this season.
Using his official X, previously Twitter, account, Parthiv referred to Maxwell as the league’s “most overrated cricketer.” He wrote, “Glenn Maxwell is the most overrated player in IPL history.”
Parthiv conducted a survey to emphasize his argument after his remark caused strong reactions. When he asked the audience to contrast Maxwell’s IPL performances with those with Australia, the vast majority of them chose the former.
“Exactly my point. His reputation and form from abroad have not transferred to the #IPL. His performance has been pretty disappointing considering the opportunity he’s had across franchisees, Patel stated as he shared the screenshot of the poll’s outcome.
Maxwell inconsistency in IPL
Maxwell is one of the most significant players for RCB since he joined the team. He scored 400 runs in the previous season and, in 2021, he became the second player in IPL history to score 500 runs (513 runs in 15 matches). But Maxwell had to go through a difficult period with the Punjab Kings, his last team. In the 2020 season, he just about managed to reach the 100-run threshold (108 runs in 13 matches). His performance in the 2018 and 2016 editions was also subpar (169, 179, and 145, respectively).
