On Thursday, Manoj Tiwary, a former batter for India, claimed that Gautam Gambhir, the current head coach of the national team, is “not the right choice” for the top position and is only skilled at coaching IPL teams. He backed up his claims with the team’s recent setbacks. India experienced their first defeat in an ODI series in Sri Lanka under Gambhir, and they hit a new low when New Zealand humiliated them 0–3 at home, an event that had never occurred in the nation’s cricket history.
Tiwary, who had a dressing room dispute with Gambhir during their IPL playing days, noted these reversals after his appointment as coach following India’s first loss of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in ten years.
“You see, the outcomes are visible. Results are honest. Numbers are honest. In an interview with PTI, Tiwary stated, “The record speaks for itself.”
During the 2013 Indian Premier League, Tiwary, 39, and Gambhir got into a fight in the KKR dressing room. Tiwary is currently the deputy sports minister in the West Bengal government.
“He has not been able to carry on the good work which Rahul Dravid did,” Tiwary added, casting doubt on Gambhir’s coaching style and his lack of success with the Indian squad.
For him to go on the track or to winning ways, a lot of time will pass. since I don’t think he has any prior coaching expertise with the Indian squad.
“In Test cricket or in one-day series, I don’t think he has any experience of coaching to be honest.” However, after winning a T20I series in Sri Lanka, Gambhir’s maiden assignment with the national squad, India defeated Bangladesh at home in all formats since his appointment.
However, Tiwary thinks that individuals with sufficient coaching experience, such Sairaj Bahutule and VVS Laxman, would have been the best candidates for the India position.
“I believe Sairaj Bahutule and VVS Laxman were the next in line to be head coaches. Additionally, these men have a long history with the NCA. The next coach was a given when Rahul Dravid wasn’t available.
Consequently, they followed that procedure. And no one knows how Gambhir entered the picture. Thus, this outcome is inevitable.
“When someone who does not have any experience and he comes up and takes up the job… “And knowing how aggressive he is as an individual in certain aspects, Tiwary stated that this result is bound to happen.”
“Therefore, it was incorrect to choose him as head coach based solely on his (IPL) performance,” he continued. I don’t think it was the appropriate decision.
