Panathinaikos and Greece international defender George Baldock was found dead in his swimming pool on Wednesday. According to official media ANA, the 31-year-old right-back, who was born in England, passed away at home in the Glyfada area in southern Athens.
The Super League of Greece along with many clubs sent their sympathies. According to ANA, Baldock’s wife—who is now overseas—notified the home’s owner after attempting, but in vain, to contact the footballer by phone. His father is Greek.
Baldock played 75 minutes for Panathinaikos in a Greek Super League match on Sunday that ended in a 0-0 tie with Olympiacos.
‘One of our own’
Harry Maguire, an England international defender for Manchester United and a former Sheffield United player, shared a picture of Baldock on Instagram along with the words “RIP” and a heartbreak emoji.
“George appeared in five games in 2011 prior to joining Sheffield United and Oxford United. We extend our deepest sympathies to George’s friends and family.”
The childhood club MK Dons in Baldock expressed their sadness and astonishment upon hearing about the awful news.
Before rising to the pinnacles of the Premier League in subsequent years, George began his career at Stadium MK, where he progressed through the junior ranks and made his professional career debut at the Club.
“You will always be one of our own, George.”
George’s family, friends, and teammates at club and nation are in our hearts and prayers.”
Sheffield United supporters dubbed Baldock “Furious George” in honor of his unwavering manner.
“I really adore coming out on top. I detest drawing as much as I detest losing,” he said to the local press.
