Mark Wood, a fast bowler, has been added to England roster for the second Test match against the West Indies, which gets underway in Nottingham on Thursday.
James Anderson, who announced his retirement from international cricket after England’s innings triumph at Lord’s, is replaced by Wood in the 14-man group.
Wood was not taken into consideration at Lord’s as he had just returned from competing in the T20 World Cup. His most recent Test performance was in March in India.
When the team was revealed, England men’s managing director Rob Key stated, “Once you come out of T20 cricket, then you’re going into Test cricket very quickly… there’s a period there where you can’t just throw someone into a Test match.”
“Rest is probably not the right term but we’ll look to make him available for selection for the second and third Tests, hopefully.”
Gus Atkinson, a Surrey fast, earned his maiden Test cap for England at Lord’s, amassing 12 for 106, the fourth-best match total by a Test rookie in history. The two seam-bowling possibilities on the team are the uncapped Dillon Pennington and Matthew Potts.
England squad for second Test: Ben Stokes (capt), Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Dillon Pennington, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
