Serie A confirmed to AFP that officials suspended Fiorentina’s match with Inter Milan on Sunday after midfielder Edoardo Bove suddenly collapsed to the ground. Paramedics rushed Bove away in an ambulance while players and fans looked on in horror as he fell with 16 minutes on the clock. Serie A told AFP that they will reschedule the goalless match for “an as-yet undetermined date.” Sky Sport report that Bove, on loan at Fiorentina from Roma, subsequently regained consciousness at the Careggi hospital which is close to Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Following the 22-year-old’s collapse, the players and officials—some of whom were visibly crying—left the field, reminding supporters of the untimely loss of former captain Davide Astori in 2018.
Tragically, Astori, a defender for Fiorentina, passed away in his hotel room at the age of 31 prior to a league game against Udinese.
In April, defender Evan Ndicka fainted with what was first thought to be a heart attack, forcing Roma to postpone and stop their match against Udinese.
The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international has a collapsed lung, according to Roma, who went on to win the match 2-1.
Fiorentina and Inter began Sunday’s match tied at 28 points, four points behind league leaders Napoli, who had earlier in the day defeated Torino 1-0.
