The legendary AB de Villiers believes that if MS Dhoni chooses to play another IPL season, the World Cup-winning captain must guide his team. Dhoni’s future at Chennai Super Kings is a subject of much discussion.
Under Dhoni’s direction, CSK has won five titles, and the two have an unbreakable friendship.
A day before the IPL 2024 season began, Dhoni gave the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad with an eye toward the future. Despite Gaikwad’s solid performance as captain and batsman, CSK was unable to advance to the IPL playoffs.

Dhoni has left everyone wondering, thus his IPL future is still up for dispute. 2020 saw his retirement from international cricket.
Respectfully, de Villiers maintained on Wednesday that the captaincy change was a mistake, as he had stated at the beginning of the season.
“I will only give you an honest answer if you’re going to report it in the right way yes so I wouldn’t say I called it a mistake. What I meant by that was with MS Dhoni around, playing against MS for so many years, that is the most intimidating sight to have him as an opposing captain,” de Villiers said in a specially scheduled press conference.
“By removing him as captain, they significantly reduced CSK’s intimidating impact. Gaikwad’s captaincy has nothing to do with it. He really does seem to have a great career ahead of him, and he captured the moment brilliantly.
“However, I’ve always thought it would be a shame to not have MS as captain just because of his presence. They have already attempted it. It was unsuccessful. You do, regrettably, need to review the outcomes this year.
“They performed admirably in most of the games, but ultimately they were unable to go to the knockout stages. It’s most obviously not due to Gaikwad’s leadership. The South African continued, “I do believe that MS should be captain while he is around.
