MS Dhoni could continue to play for CSK in the IPL, but ‘one condition’ has to be fulfilled by the BCCI.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season ended months ago, but MS Dhoni future with the Chennai Super Kings is still up in the air. This year, before the season began, Dhoni resigned from his position as the team’s captain, making room for Ruturaj Gaikwad to take charge. Despite CSK’s failure to make the playoffs, Ruturaj’s leadership offered many advantages. Does that imply, however, that Dhoni’s career is gone as a player? According to sources, the IPL administration and the BCCI’s decision of the Thala’s retention will determine whether or not they stay in the league.
The amount of players the BCCI will let the franchises keep is unclear because a massive auction is slated to take place before to the IPL 2025 season. As to a report published in Cricbuzz, Dhoni’s playing career in the league is contingent upon the BCCI permitting each team to retain a minimum of 5–6 players.
Currently, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube are the Super Kings’ most probable candidates for retention, however the order of retention may change.
It was previously reported that franchise owners have received an invitation from the IPL executives to a meeting on July 31 to discuss the retention issue.
The timing and location of the meeting were not yet confirmed, but IPL CEO Hemang Amin allegedly texted the franchise owners to schedule it.
“It is also believed that Amin mentioned the meeting would take place on July 31 in the late afternoon or evening. According to a source, “it is thought that every owner has confirmed their availability for the meeting.”
“While the exact venue has not been confirmed, the congregation is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre, the BCCI headquarters, located within the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai,” said the statement.
The source said that the BCCI may permit the retention of five or six players.
