In the Tier 1 women’s domestic structure, the Blaze has named Craig Cumming, a former batter for New Zealand, as head coach for their inaugural season affiliated with Nottinghamshire.
With Otago Sparks, Cumming has had success in his native country, helping them win two 50-over Hallyburton Johnstone championships in as many years. After the Super Smash T20 tournament is over, he will travel to the UK in the new year.
Cumming stated, “I feel very humbled and privileged to have the opportunity to serve as head coach of the Blaze.”

“I’ve visited the squad in the UK over the past few years and know a few of the players and staff already, so I know they all strive for excellence. Above all, though, I’m certain that I’m joining an exceptional team of individuals, both on and off the field.
“I can’t wait to be part of this wonderful team, and I’m ambitious to help deliver more of the success they have had in the past couple of seasons.”
Chris Guest, who led the Blaze to their first trophy in the Charlotte Edwards Cup last season, left to head the England Women Under-19s, which is why they hired Cumming.
James Cutt, director of cricket at Blaze, stated: “Craig’s coaching success speaks for itself. Craig has had a big effect at Otago in a short amount of time. In recent years, Otago has been a dominant force in New Zealand women’s cricket. I’m eager to watch how we develop under his direction.
“After putting up such a good record over the previous two summers, we had the chance to examine how we should proceed from a position of strength after Guesty’s departure.
“After a thorough, international search to identify the best applicant, Craig’s qualifications and background stood out among a number of really talented candidates. “There’s an exciting summer ahead for us, with an expanded fixture list and a squad with a blend of young talent and international experience, and I’m sure Craig’s fresh perspective will be a huge asset.”
