Borussia Dortmund’s troubles have become worse after they lost 1-0 in extra time to Wolfsburg on Tuesday, eliminating them from the German Cup in the second round. The game was headed for penalties after ninety minutes when Jonas Wind scored from close range in the 117th minute. With seven points separating them from first place in the league after just eight games, Dortmund and new coach Nuri Sahin entered the game under pressure.
Despite losing their previous four away games across all competitions, Dortmund had the better of the first half when Maximilian Beier struck the post with the goalie as their only opponent.
As extra time drew to a close, the visitors appeared to have set their eyes on penalties despite controlling possession and lacking attacking fluency.
But with three minutes left, Wind gave the home team the lead, further taxing Sahin and his faltering team.
“Giving up a goal like that after 120 minutes is really frustrating. “It’s difficult,” Pascal Gross of Dortmund remarked.
“We’ve got injury problems, but that’s no excuse — we had chances to score.”
Nick Woltemade and Chris Fuehrich scored goals as Stuttgart defeated Kaiserslautern, the previous year’s finalists, 2-1 at home.
After 14 minutes, Woltemade gave Stuttgart the lead, but late in the first half, Boris Tomiak gave Kaiserslautern the equalizer.
With 15 minutes left, Stuttgart regained the lead thanks to a goal by Ermedin Demirovic, who again provided for Fuehrich.
Patrik Schick’s brace earlier Tuesday put Bayer Leverkusen, the defending champions of the German Cup, on track to defeat Elversberg 3-0.
Schick scored twice in the first ten minutes as Leverkusen exploded out of the starting blocks. At the 36-minute mark, Aleix Garcia scored a spectacular free kick to add a third.
Elversberg became the final side to defeat the current champions in the 2022–2023 German Cup after defeating Leverkusen in the opening round.
Yussuf Poulsen scored two goals as RB Leipzig, who had won consecutive German Cups before to Leverkusen’s victory, defeated St Pauli 4-2 at home.
Poulsen and Christoph Baumgartner gave the home team a 2-0 lead after 17 minutes. On minute twenty-eight, Morgan Guilavogui pulled one back.
Swedish defender Eric Smith gave St Pauli the lead early in the second half, but with ten minutes left, Norwegian attacker Antonio Nusa finished the game with a sophisticated solo goal.
In other matches, Augsburg defeated five-time champions Schalke 3-0 thanks to goals from Alexis Claude-Maurice, Arne Maier, and Samuel Essende.
Regensburg defeated Greuther Fuerth, Cologne defeated Holstein Kiel, and Karlsruhe defeated Kickers Offenbach 2-0.
Bayern Munich, the 20-time winners, will visit Mainz on Wednesday, while Eintracht Frankfurt will host Borussia Moenchengladbach.
