At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, the Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill did not try to conceal his dismay as his team was bowled out for the lowest total of the Twenty24 Indian Premier League against the Delhi Capitals. 89 runs were scored by GT in 17.3 overs. Additionally, it was GT’s lowest tournament total. Then, DC took just 8.4 overs to chase the mark down with six wickets in hand, adding further salt to their wounds.
Shubman Gill pointed fingers at his hitters’ poor shot selection, refusing to attribute GT’s collapse on the pitch. Gill, who was out for eight, stated, “Our batting performance was very average,” during the post-match presentation. “To be honest, I felt the wicket was OK. The ball I got out to had nothing to do with the surface, as you can tell by looking at our dismissals. Sai [Sudharsan] was run out, and Wriddhi [Wriddhiman Saha] bhai’s exit had nothing to do with the pitch either. Thus, I don’t believe the pitch had anything to do with it. I would say it was just a horrible batting effort and poor shot selection.
This was the second IPL that GT’s batting unit failed miserably. They were chasing 164 against the Lucknow Super Giants when they were bowled out for 130. Shubman Gill believed that the low score prevented his bowlers from having any opportunity to enter the game. “When the opposition are chasing 89, unless someone takes a double hat-trick, the opposition will always be in the game.”
With only two victories in seven games after this crushing loss, GT dropped to seventh place in the IPL 2024 points standings. DC’s tremendous net run rate improvement after winning the game in nine overs propelled them to the sixth position. But Shubman Gill wasn’t quite ready to pull the panic button just yet. “This is just the halfway mark of the season for us, we have won 3 and hopefully we win another 5-6 from the next 7 like in the last couple of years,” added the coach.
Mukesh Kumar, Ishant Sharma shine for DC
Mukesh Kumar, the DC pacer, distinguished out with stats of 3-14. Gujarat continued to lose wickets due to some disciplined bowling after experienced fast bowler Ishant Sharma removed skipper Shubman Gill for eight in the match’s second over.

After Sumit Kumar sent Sai Sudarshan back for 12 with a straight toss at the non-striker’s end, the fielding was still outstanding. Pant demonstrated his agility behind the stumps by diving to knock David Miller off Ishant in the first instance. With two balls remaining in the over, the wicketkeeper stumped South African spinner Tristan Stubbs, dismissing Abhinav Manohar for eight and Shahrukh Khan for a duck in the space of three balls.
Gujarat was down to 66-7, but Rashid Khan held strong at one end, scoring 31 off only 24 balls, before Pant took a fine catch behind the stumps to dismiss him. In contrast to some huge scores, such as two record highs of 277 and 287 by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat’s total is the lowest of the season.
