Ellyse Perry and Amelia Kerr combined to win the WBBL match against the Melbourne Stars, demonstrating Kerr’s instant influence with the Sydney Sixers.
In her Sixers debut on Friday at Junction Oval, the great all-rounder from New Zealand won player of the match as they defeated the host team by six runs using the DLS technique.
The Sixers’ chase got off to a rough start when Sarah Bryce was caught at first slip by Meg Lanning in the second over for one off of Kim Garth’s first delivery.
In her first match since rupturing her right quadriceps during the October 24 one-day match against India, that put Kerr in the crease. Perry’s undefeated 48 from 44 deliveries, which included six boundaries, and Kerr’s 46 not out from 41 balls, which included five fours, helped them defeat the Stars.
She also claimed two wickets, including Annabel Sutherland, the leading scorer for the Stars.
There were worries that Kerr, the T20 World Cup player of the tournament, may miss a significant portion of the WBBL. However, she has already fully healed from her injuries. Following five WBBL seasons with the Brisbane Heat, Kerr has signed a three-year contract with the Sixers.
Stars got off to a strong start when Perry won the toss, but she dismissed Ines McKeon in the fourth over. Before Sutherland contributed some substance with her 42 from 36 balls, which included two fours and two sixes, the Stars faltered from 32 for 1 to 50 for 3.
Kerr finished with 2 for 36 from four overs after dismissing Sutherland in the last over and taking out Tess Flintoff two balls later.
Sophie Ecclestone, an English sensation, was the Sixers’ best batswoman, taking 3 for 19 in four overs.
As a consequence, Sydney improves to a 3-2 record, while the two Melbourne clubs both take defeats into their Saturday derby at Junction Oval.
