Ajit Agarkar said that Suryakumar Yadav is just considered a T20I player at this point and is not part of India’s ODI plans.
Despite being named the new T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav was left out of the ODI selection, something that BCCI head selector Ajit Agarkar candidly acknowledged. Prior to the Sri Lankan visit, the BCCI made some audacious choices, selecting Surya as the new T20I captain instead of Hardik Pandya, although he was not selected for the ODI squad. Since India’s loss to Australia in Ahmedabad during the 2023 World Cup final, Surya has not appeared in an ODI. The flashy batsman had a lackluster competition; after drawing criticism for his poor shot selection in the championship match, doubts were voiced about his ODI batting experience.
The former bowler for India said that the team management was happy with Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant in the middle order, hence Surya’s name was not even contemplated for the ODI squad.
“No, Surya (for ODIs) hasn’t been mentioned yet. KL (Rahul) and Shreyas (Iyer) are back. They’ve have fantastic ODI World Cups. Pant, Rishabh, is also back. Thus, through that intermediate order, there is some true quality. Thus, Surya is now a T20I player,” Agarkar stated during India’s news conference prior to leaving.
Surya’s performance in ODIs is quite different from T20Is. With an unimpressive average of 25.76, he has scored 773 runs in 37 One-Day Internationals for India.
Before promoting Surya to the major role, the BCCI received positive comments about him from the players’ locker room, according to the head selector of the BCCI. Surya was deemed the worthy contender for the T20I captaincy.
“What made Surya the captain? as he is among the worthy contenders. You receive a lot of input from the dressing room, according to the person we know who has been there for the past year. During the joint news conference, Agarkar stated, “He is still one of the best T20 batters in the world and has a good cricketing brain.”
With the Indian squad, Suryakumar has already in Sri Lanka. From July 27 to July 31, they will play three Twenty20 Internationals and as many One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against the hosts. It will also usher in a new chapter in the team’s history as Gautam Gambhir assumes the role of head coach.
